Three of Wands

The Plate

We see him only from behind. A figure in a red mantle stands on high ground above a yellow sea, three staves planted around him, his right hand resting on one of them as if on a railing while small ships cross the water below. Waite (1911) calls him "a calm, stately personage, with his back turned, looking from a cliff's edge at ships passing over the sea", and the turned back is the whole design: the plate refuses us his face so that we take his position instead. He is not launching and not landing. He is between the two, and the card gives him nothing to do about it.

The Reading

Where the Two of Wands held the globe and hesitated, the Three has committed; the ships on the water are the choice made visible. This is the merchant's card in the oldest sense — goods sent out on faith in a return that no one can hurry. The three planted staves make a rough enclosure around the watcher: what has been built holds him up while what has been risked is out of his hands. The card counsels neither push nor retreat, only the discipline of the interval.

Reversed, the same scene curdles into pretense. The stance of the watcher is kept and the sending was skipped; or the ships are real and the figure will not signal them in, preferring the dignity of the cliff to the noise of the harbor.

In the School

The suit belongs to Fire, the element of will in the tables of the astrology course. In the threes fire first produces something outside itself — the ships are the will made cargo, and the lesson is that a sent thing must be allowed its own weather.
