Three of Cups

The Plate

Nobody in this picture is looking at the cups. The three women raise them high, rims tilted toward a meeting point above their heads, but their eyes are on each other — the toast is aimed at the company, not the wine. They dance in a ring, one in white, one in red, one in a patterned gown, arms crossing and clasping so that the circle actually closes. At their feet the ground is heaped with the reason for all of it: pumpkins, grapes, vines, a harvest in fact and not in metaphor. The plate is careful about that. The joy has a date and a cause; the fruit came in, and this is what a suit of feeling does about it.

The Reading

The card corrects a private reading of the Ace. Feeling overflowed there with no one to receive it; here the overflow has found company, and the picture insists that this multiplies rather than divides the supply. Three cups raised together hold more than three cups raised alone — bad arithmetic, true experience. The harvest at their feet keeps the celebration honest: this is joy after labor, with something real to toast.

Reversed, the ring keeps turning after the fruit is gone. Celebration becomes routine, then appetite, then obligation; or the circle that once welcomed hardens at the rim, and the dance is now mostly about who is not in it.
