The Plate

The dancer holds a wand in each hand. One would be emblem enough — the Magician manages with one — and the doubling is the plate's quiet claim that at the end of the sequence nothing is left unpaired: both currents held, both directions kept. She dances inside an oval wreath of laurel bound top and bottom with red ribbons tied in the figure of a lemniscate, one leg crossed behind the other in a step the Hanged Man made upside down. At the four corners, heads watch from clouds: a man, an eagle, a bull, a lion — the four fixed watchers from the Wheel of Fortune's corners, no longer reading their books, now simply looking. Waite (1911) calls the card "the perfection and end of the Cosmos," and the geometry agrees with him before the words do.

The Reading

Completion, on this plate, is not stillness; it is a dance held inside a boundary. The wreath is closed — that is the difference between this card and every partial success before it — and the ribbons that close it are tied in the figure of infinity, so the ending is drawn as something that can be circled again from a higher turn. The four watchers make it an examination as much as a celebration: the journey certified from all four fixed corners at once. Take the recognition; integrate the lesson; note the step already moving inside the ring.

Reversed, the card names the ninety-five percent finish — the last chapter unwritten, the diploma unclaimed, the wreath open at one ribbon. Nearly closed is a different shape from closed. The school treats the final five percent as its own labor, with its own resistance, and budgets for it accordingly.

In the School

Saturn rules the World in the school's tables — the lord of limits presiding over the limit reached — and its element is Earth. The tarot course ends on it in Degree VII, the crown of the Work, where the trumps close their circle and hand the student back, lighter, to the Fool.
