The Plate

The wall is behind the child, and it is low. Four sunflowers look over it — turned, oddly, toward the child rather than toward the sky — and past it there is nothing worth drawing, because everything the card cares about has already come out into the open field. Waite (1911) gives the foreground in one phrase: "a naked child mounted on a white horse and displaying a red standard." The horse wears no saddle and no bridle; the child wears a wreath of flowers with one red feather, arms wide, and the banner streams behind on its pole. Above, the sun itself takes up a third of the plate, rays alternating straight and waved, a face drawn calm at the center of the light.

The Reading

The card's claim is that some successes need no management. The child holds no reins because this horse needs none; the standard is carried loosely, in one hand, because triumph of this kind does not have to grip. What thrives under this trump thrives with nothing to hide — and the test the card proposes is exactly that simple, and it cuts: whatever part of a situation would prefer the far side of the wall, the shaded garden, the unwitnessed version, does not belong to the Sun. The sunflowers make the same point botanically. Grown things turn toward the life in the field, not away from it.

Reversed, the school reads dimming rather than disaster: brightness delayed by a cloud's width, success real but overexposed, joy performed for an audience instead of felt in the skin. The remedy is not more light. It is less staging.

In the School

The Sun stands as its own planet in the school's tables, a Fire card, its keywords clarity, vitality, the open field. The tarot course ends Degree VI with it, the last of the lights after the fall, before Degree VII brings Judgement's summons and the World's closed ring.
