The Plate

A crayfish is climbing out of the pool. It has reached the edge — claws on the bank, body half in water — and the road it faces runs up the middle of the card, between a dog and a wolf with lifted muzzles, between two grey towers, over the hills and out of sight. The moon above shows a face in profile inside a full disc, crescent and fullness drawn together, and drops of light fall from it toward the earth — fifteen, by the usual count — as if the light itself were shedding. Waite (1911) follows the crayfish rather than the road: it crawls from the deeps toward land, he writes, and as a rule "sinks back whence it came." The plate leaves it at the waterline, still deciding.

The Reading

This is the stretch that must be walked without clear sight. The card does not forbid travel — the road is drawn, and it goes through — but it cancels the usual warranties: under this light sizes are wrong, distances are wrong, and the two canine voices, one domesticated and one not, are both guessing. Instinct knows this terrain the way the crayfish knows the pool, from underneath. Trust it for footing, not for facts, and verify everything at dawn.

Reversed, the card most often marks the thinning of a deception — frequently self-made — as fears begin to be measured against daylight and come up smaller than their shadows. The instruction is patience with the light. It changes on schedule, and nothing signed at night should be counted until it does.

In the School

The Moon carries Neptune in Pisces and the element Water — the deepest immersion the school assigns any trump. The tarot course walks it third in Degree VI: after the Tower's demolition and the Star's fixed light, the road between them in the dark — with the Sun still to come at the degree's end.
