The four instruments on the table and one hand raised: attention gathered to a point becomes capability.

The Plate

The belt is a serpent, and it is biting its own tail. The figure above it stands in the posture everyone remembers — right hand lifting a short white wand toward the sky, left index finger pointed at the ground — but the 1909 plate frames that gesture with quieter emblems: a horizontal figure of eight floating over the head like a halo that refused to close, and the ouroboros at the waist. On the table before him lie a cup, a sword, a staff, and a pentacle, the four suits of the deck laid out like a tradesman's stock. Red roses climb overhead; roses and lilies grow at his feet. Waite (1911) reads the double gesture as the drawing-down of the above into the below, and the plate agrees: the body itself is the conduit, one hand open to receive and one committed to deliver.

The Reading

Nothing on the table belongs to him in any interesting sense. Cup, sword, wand, coin — the tools are common property, the whole deck's equipment in miniature, and the card's claim is that capability lives not in the implements but in the gathered attention standing over them. The lifted wand is small. The posture is everything. Skill, will, means: the school's three keywords for this card are three names for one act of pointing.

The shadow reads off the same picture with the current reversed. A conduit can run either way; the same table dressed at a fair is a conjurer's stall, and misdirection is only direction turned on the audience. When the card arrives amid too many projects, ask where the attention actually flows — a beam split eight ways lights nothing.

In the School

The tarot course takes this card in Degree II, in the Fool's company, as the second posture of mind: the Fool's open readiness focused to a point. Its planet is Mercury, carrier of messages between worlds; its element, Air.
