The Plate

The serpent is easy to miss. It coils the trunk of the fruit tree behind the woman, head turned toward her; behind the man stands the other tree, carrying twelve small flames instead of leaves. Between and above the two naked figures an angel rises out of cloud, violet-robed, hair like fire, wings spread nearly the width of the plate, a great sun overhead and a single mountain in the gap between the human bodies. Now trace the sightlines, because the plate's argument is drawn in them: the man looks at the woman, the woman looks up at the angel, and neither looks at us. Waite (1911) calls the card human love exhibited as part of the way and the life, and deliberately set aside the older design of a man choosing between two women.

The Reading

The choice did not vanish with the old design; it deepened. What the sightlines teach is that every real union is a relay — the visible loved through to the invisible, desire aligned with something above the two desiring — and that such alignment must be chosen, not drifted into. A choice of this size defines the chooser. Selecting is done with the persuasive half; choosing takes the whole person, serpent-side included, which is why the tree of knowledge stays in the frame.

The shadow is misalignment wearing romance's clothes, or the decision endlessly postponed to keep both roads open. The mountain between the figures is the distance that only a decision crosses; no one in the plate has crossed it yet.

In the School

The tarot course reads the card in Degree III, with the Emperor and the Hierophant before it, as the human hinge of correspondence: the point where the alignment of above and below must be freely chosen. Its sign is Gemini, twinned in the plate's two figures; its planet, Mercury; its element, Air.
