The Hermit

The Plate

Inside the lantern burns a six-pointed star. The plate could have drawn a flame; it drew a star instead, held out in the right hand of a grey-cowled elder who stands on snow at the summit of a peak, eyes lowered, a plain staff in his left hand. No road is drawn, no companion, no town below the frame — only the figure, the altitude, and the light carried at arm's length rather than close to the body. Waite (1911) catches the gesture in a phrase worth keeping whole: his beacon intimates that where I am, you also may be.

The Reading

The lantern is held out. That single fact separates this card from every romance of the recluse: the withdrawal in the picture is aimed at someone, the light angled outward for a climber the Hermit cannot yet see. Solitude here is method, not temperament. The search that this card names is the kind no meeting produces — it wants silence and a single lamp — and the peak is not a refusal of the world's tempo but altitude taken above it, on purpose and for a term. He moves at a snail's pace because slowness is the instrument, not the infirmity.

Read in shadow, the term is what goes missing. Isolation past its purpose is a retreat that forgot it was meant to end in return; the lamp turns inward until it only warms its keeper. The star was set in the lantern to be seen from below.

The tarot course studies him in Degree IV, beside Strength, the Wheel of Fortune and Justice, as the deliberately slowed rate — the law of motion behind that reading belongs to Foundations of Hermeticism. His sign is Virgo; his planet, Mercury; his element, Earth — the mountain under the snow.
