Ten of Pentacles

The Plate

Two dogs notice the old man; his family does not. He sits outside the great archway in a robe woven with grapes and crescents, white-bearded, half-invisible against the stone, stroking one of the white hounds — and through the arch a younger man and woman stand talking over each other's shoulders while a child behind them reaches for a dog's tail. Ten pentacles are laid over the whole scene, arranged — and this is the plate's open secret — in the pattern the school will later teach as the Tree of Life. Waite (1911) leaves the arrangement unremarked. The arch itself is carved with a tower and a pair of scales: heraldry, a house old enough to have arms.

The Reading

Everything on this card works, and almost nobody on it is looking at anybody. That is legacy drawn honestly: the wealth has become architecture, the architecture shelters three generations, and the founder who assembled it sits at the edge of his own achievement, patted by dogs. The card promises what the suit can genuinely deliver at ten — permanence, provision across time, a name on an arch. It also shows the cost of scale: a structure that no longer needs your attention will eventually do without your presence.

Reversed, the structure survives and the household inside it does not. Wills split families the money was meant to hold together; rooms are kept for the sake of keeping; the tower on the arch outvotes the child under it. The tenth coin is still in place. Ask who it now serves.

In the School

The ten closes the suit: Earth, Pentacles' element in the elements table of Foundations of Astrology, brought to its full expression as inheritance — matter arranged so deliberately that it goes on arranging the living.
