The Plate

The children are not looking at the rainbow. That is the plate's finest decision. Ten cups stand in an arc of color across the sky, and the two adults below have stopped to see it — arms around each other's waists, free arms lifted toward the arc in something between greeting and disbelief. Beside them the two children have taken hands and are dancing, faces toward each other, wholly uninterested in the sky. Behind everything sits the point of it all: a small house among trees, a river, rising ground. Waite (1911) has the couple contemplating the arc in wonder; the children, he might have added, are too busy being its evidence.

The Reading

The suit ends at home. After the offered ace, the trade, the party, the sulk, the spill, the garden, the visions, the departure, and the feast, the tenth card sets feeling down inside an ordinary life and lets it stay — and the plate splits the state into its two honest halves. The adults' half is gratitude: fulfillment recognized, named, saluted. The children's half is better and cannot be aimed at: fulfillment inhabited, feeling so at rest it no longer watches itself. A reading that produces this card is being shown both, and asked which one the household currently practices.

Reversed, the arc and the house come apart. The sign stays up while the rooms beneath it quarrel; or the family album is curated for the neighbors while nobody in it dances.

In the School

Water is the element of Cups, the suit of feeling in the astrology course's elements table. The tens complete each element's story, and Water completes as a household — the vessel becomes a home.
