The Plate

Her hands are bare, and both of them are on the lion's jaws. No gauntlet, no weapon, no visible strain — the woman in the white robe bends slightly over the animal, closing its mouth, while the lion's tail curls down between its legs and its eyes turn up toward her face. A garland of flowers serves her for belt and for crown; over her head floats the horizontal eight the Magician also wears. The ground is green and a blue peak stands far off. Waite (1911) is plain that she is closing the mouth, not prying it open, and notes that the chain of older designs has here become no chain at all — flowers hold what iron used to.

The Reading

The card's title promises force, and the picture withholds every instrument of it. That gap is the teaching. Whatever in a situation is animal — appetite, anger, panic, the body's old vote — is not defeated by suppression, which merely cages it, nor by argument, which it cannot hear. It is mastered by something quieter: patience held steadily enough that the animal's strength changes owners. Courage in this plate has no armor. And the lion is not dead; he is employed.

The reversal keeps the lion and loses the patience. Force gets used because gentleness felt too slow, or the animal is locked away and called handled, and the fee for the cage compounds monthly. The picture supplies the test for which side is live: are the hands still bare, or have they reached for a tool?

In the School

The tarot course opens Degree IV with her, set against the Chariot that closed the degree before: where the driver harnesses two contraries, she converts one. Her sign is Leo, present in the plate in person; her planet, the Sun; her element, Fire.
