Queen of Wands

The Plate

A black cat sits at the foot of the throne and looks straight out of the card — the only creature in this court that meets the reader's eye. Above it the queen sits full-face, knees apart, a sunflower held out in her left hand like a lamp and her stave upright in her right; lions crown the throne, and carved sunflowers repeat behind her shoulders. Waite (1911) writes that her personality "corresponds to that of the King, but is more magnetic", and the plate spends its magnetism on frontality: alone among the wands court, she faces us squarely, and so does her cat.

The Reading

A queen holds her suit's element as a settled possession, and this one has settled fire into a household. The sunflower is the card's argument in miniature — a domesticated sun, a fire that feeds rather than consumes — while the stave in the other hand says the domestication was a choice and remains one. Upright she is confidence at rest: the will that no longer needs to charge because the ground it wanted is under the throne. The cat is her honest footnote. Something dark, quick, and entirely her own sits at the base of all that warmth, and the picture does not apologize for it.

Reversed, the two hands trade emphasis. The sunflower drops and the stave does the talking — warmth become demand, generosity kept as an account, the small black familiar grown large enough to fill the room.

In the School

Wands carry Fire, the will, in the astrology course's table of elements. The court wears its element as a person wears a coat; the queen keeps it — fire as a tended hearth, held steady at the temperature a household can live beside.
