Queen of Cups
empathy · the closed cup · deep water held
- Element
- Water
The only cup in the deck that is closed: feeling so deep it must be contained to be carried.
The Plate
The cup has a lid. Hers is the only closed vessel in the deck — a high ornamented piece with handles shaped like angels and a cross above the cover — and she is studying it, eyes fixed, as if the lid were no obstacle to reading what is inside. Waite (1911) says she sees visions in a cup, and the plate takes him at his word. Her throne stands at the sea's very edge on a shore of colored pebbles, its canopy a great scallop shell, small mermaid figures carved into it; the water comes all the way to her feet, and the lower folds of her mantle pick up the pattern of the waves until cloth and sea are hard to tell apart. She could not sit closer to the element without entering it.
The Reading
The lid is the teaching. Feeling this deep is not carried open — it would slop over every rim in the house — so the queen contains it, and containment here is not repression but craft: the water is all present, honored, and held in a form that can be borne from room to room. That she gazes at the closed cup and reads it anyway is the second lesson; her empathy works through surfaces, hers and other people's. In a spread she is the one who knows what you feel before you have decided to say it, and says nothing until it helps.
Reversed, the craft fails one of two ways. The lid seals — feeling stored so long it sours in the dark — or the vessel gives out entirely, and a gift for other people's weather becomes drowning in it.
In the School
Cups carry Water, the suit of feeling in the elements table of the astrology course. Among the court temperaments the queen keeps the element — Water held at depth, the shoreline throne exactly on the boundary she governs in herself.
UPRIGHT
Empathy with a keel — deep feeling held, honored, and read closely. She knows what her cup contains because she looks.
REVERSED
The lid stuck fast, or gone: feeling sealed until it ferments, or empathy flooding its banks into everyone else's weather.
