The Plate

Salamanders climb his tunic — the yellow garment is patterned all over with the small fire-lizards of this suit's court, tails curling toward mouths without touching. The page stands in open desert, three mounds like distant pyramids behind him, and does nothing except look up along the stave he has planted before him, both hands on it, examining it the way one examines a thing recently delivered. Waite (1911) has him "in the act of proclamation", a faithful messenger — and yet the plate shows him telling no one, for the desert is empty. Whatever he proclaims, he proclaims to the stave.

The Reading

The court cards of a suit are its element practiced as character, and the page is the practice at its start. He holds fire the way a student holds a text: attentively, a little formally, unsure yet what in it is alive. Upright, the card brings enthusiasm in its most useful form — declared, examined, willing to study its own instrument before swinging it — and, by extension, the message or messenger of a new venture. The empty desert is not a flaw in the promise. Apprenticeship is done where there is nothing yet to burn.

Reversed, the examining stops and only the announcing remains. The stave becomes a prop; the news of fire arrives, is repeated with feeling, and kindles nothing. A page reversed is not a liar — he is a student who has mistaken the syllabus for the course.

In the School

Wands carry Fire, the will, in the elements table of Foundations of Astrology. The court wears its element as a person wears a coat: the page is learning it — how it hangs, where it binds — and the salamanders on his tunic are the element worn before it is understood.
