The Plate

The trees lean one way and the page looks the other. Everything on this plate is in motion except its footing — clouds torn ragged, a flock of birds scattered across the sky, the page's hair blown over the face — and through it the figure stands on high ground, sword up in both hands, glancing back over the shoulder, away from where the blade points. Waite (1911) gives the card vigilance, examination, even espionage. The picture is kinder and more exact: this is someone out learning the wind by standing in it, holding the family weapon a little too high for their reach.

The Reading

First of the four courts of Air, and the element is still weather to him rather than instrument — it blows through the scene and the page attends to all of it at once. The school values what that looks like in a life: the watcher, the note-taker, the one who reads the room and asks the question nobody else thought to draft. The over-the-shoulder glance is also the tell. Attention this new goes everywhere, which means it goes to rumor as readily as to fact, and a sword held while gossiping is still a sword.

Reversed, the vigilance loses its object: surveillance for its own thrill, secrets kept as currency, cleverness spent avoiding the slow work that would earn the blade. The wind stays; the footing goes.
