Element
Earth

The coin examined like a lens: study that intends, one day, to be paid for.

The Plate

He holds the coin at eye level, the way one holds a lens. The Page stands alone in a green field wearing a tunic the color of the grass, a red scarf wound at his head, and his whole attention has gone up into the pentacle raised lightly in both hands — behind him the plate quietly furnishes a curriculum he has not noticed yet: a ploughed strip of brown furrows to one side, a small grove, a blue mountain far off. He is not walking. Waite (1911) says he moves slowly, insensible of what is about him; the picture says even the slowness has stopped.

The Reading

Of the four Pages this one studies hardest and travels least, and the card is best read as that exact combination. Something material has become fascinating — a trade, a science, a first sum of money, a body finally attended to — and the fascination is genuine scholarship in embryo, not daydream. The furrows matter. Someone ploughed that field, and the Page stands in the evidence that study of this suit ends in ground actually worked. The card's promise is modest and firm: begin the apprenticeship now and the coin in your hands will one day be the coin you cut at the bench.

Reversed, the gaze never comes down. The course is researched for a third year and not taken; the savings are counted and never risked on so much as a chisel; the lens becomes a mirror. Fascination that refuses the furrow is the suit's politest failure.

In the School

In the court of each suit the Page learns the element, and this Page learns Earth — Pentacles' element in the astrology course's elements table — the only element that can be learned with the hands.

UPRIGHT

Study begun in earnest: diligence, a first skill or first savings, the coin examined until it becomes a subject. News of money or schooling.

REVERSED

The scholar who never enrolls — plans admired instead of started, study without ground under it, the coin stared at and never spent on tools.

Learn the cards as one system, not seventy-eight fortunes.
