Page of Cups

The Plate

A fish is looking out of the cup. It has surfaced from whatever a cup this size can hold, propped at the rim, and the young man holds the vessel at eye level and looks back at it — and neither party seems alarmed. That mutual calm is the whole temperament of the card. The page stands on firm ground in a blue tunic printed all over with flowers, a soft beret with a long scarf trailing off it, one hand on his hip; behind him the sea ripples in even, patterned waves, more decorative than dangerous. Every other figure in this suit receives feeling from somewhere. The page is the only one whose cup answers him.

The Reading

Pages are messengers, and the message here comes up out of the element itself: an image, an impulse, a piece of tender news arriving from below the waterline of the mind, odd in form and completely sincere. The card asks for the page's own response — interest without panic. A fish in a cup is easy to laugh at, easy to tip out, and the plate's quiet claim is that the ones who look back are the ones the element keeps talking to. In practical spreads the card is often literal: a soft-spoken offer, a creative beginning, word from someone young or from the young part of someone.

Reversed, the conversation fails at one end or the other. The fish is dropped, mocked, or dressed up and paraded; the impulse never becomes an act; the tender news stays in the cup and goes stale there.

In the School

Cups carry Water, the suit of feeling in the table of the elements of Foundations of Astrology. The court cards are temperaments of their element, and the page is the student's own seat: the one who is still learning the water, cup held up to the light.
