The Plate
Even the birds are being blown backward. They scatter low across the Knight of Swords while the trees bend and the clouds streak sideways in hard bars, and through all of it the horse is at full stretch, the knight risen in the stirrups, sword high, visor up, mouth open. Look at the tack: the breast-strap and harness are worked with butterflies and birds, Air's own creatures fastened to the machinery of the charge. Waite (1911) reaches for Galahad here — a sword swift and sure because the one who bears it is clean — and then leaves the reader to check whether that condition is met.
The Reading
The knight rides what the page was still learning. This is Air as momentum: the case made at speed, the intervention that cannot wait for consensus, thought converted wholly into motion. The school does not treat the card as a rebuke — some situations genuinely call for the cavalry of the mind, and the plate is honest about the beauty of it. It is also honest about the cost structure. A rider this committed cannot hear objections over his own wind, and the horse, notice, is not looking where the sword points. Waite's borrowed test travels with every appearance of the card: swift and sure, granted — on what errand, and clean by whose accounting.
Reversed, the charge outlives its target. The argument continues because stopping feels like losing; the speed becomes the position. What was cavalry is now weather.
In the School
In the temperaments of Foundations of Astrology's elements table the knight rides his element. Air ridden is thought at maximum velocity — the suit's severance delivered from horseback, which is why the school teaches this court paired with its queen, who keeps what he only spends.
UPRIGHT
The charge of thought: conviction at full speed, the argument arriving before the objections can form ranks. Decisive when the cause is clean; expensive when it is not.
REVERSED
The same charge with no enemy or no brakes — quarrel for its own sake, the crusade past its point, velocity doing the job that thinking should.
