The fire that learned to hold a throne: vision with the authority to enact itself.
The Plate
A live salamander sits at the base of the throne, small and green, the one creature on the card that is not embroidery. Everything else has been converted into emblem — lions and salamanders pattern the throne's back and the king's cape, and the stitched lizards curl their tails toward their mouths without quite closing the circle. The king sits in near profile, turned toward the card's edge as if the kingdom's business were happening just off-frame, and his stave is the suit's living branch grown into office: tall, in leaf, grounded on the dais. Waite (1911) gives this figure an "ardent" and "noble" nature; the plate agrees, then adds its dry footnote at his feet — whatever fire has become here, one small piece of it is still an animal.
The Reading
A king governs what the rest of his court is still handling. The page examined fire, the knight rode it, the queen kept it; the king has converted it into jurisdiction — decisions, appointments, the slow art of making one will move many hands. Upright, the card is authority of the best fire kind: quick to decide, generous with heat, bored by maintenance and honest about it. The unclosed circles in the embroidery deserve a second look. A will that closed every circle would be finished, and a finished fire is out; this king stays competent precisely by staying slightly incomplete.
Reversed, the jurisdiction outlives the flame. Read command exercised from habit, vision imposed rather than argued, or the throne's heat spent on keeping the room small enough to dominate.
In the School
Fire, the element of the wands in the table of Foundations of Astrology, is the will; the court wears it as a person wears a coat, and the king governs it — the temperament in which fire stops being weather and becomes policy.
UPRIGHT
Vision with the authority to enact itself: leadership by temperament, fire that has learned administration without losing appetite.
REVERSED
The same authority narrowed — vision enforced instead of argued, the ruler of a small hot room; or command kept after the fire that justified it has gone out.
