The Plate

Find his foot. Under the hem of a robe embroidered all over with grape clusters and vine leaves — so thickly that the King half-dissolves into the garden around his throne — one armored sabaton shows, and the armor is the point. The plate dresses this man as harvest itself, bull heads carved on his throne, castle roof behind his shoulder, scepter in the right hand and the great pentacle steadied under the left, and then lets a single piece of steel confess that all this ripeness is defended. Ease at this scale, the picture says, has never once been unguarded.

The Reading

The suit ends its court with a man distinguishable from his wealth only at the foot and the crown, and the school reads the near-dissolution both ways at once. Taken well, it is mastery: appetite so thoroughly worked into estate that the King no longer grasps at anything — the coin rests under his hand, unclutched, the exact opposite of the Four's embrace. He funds, builds, endows, stands surety; his answer to most problems is competence plus money, and the irritating thing is how often that answer is right. Taken badly, the vines are doing the holding. A man who cannot be told apart from his holdings has, by definition, been acquired.

Reversed the card tilts fully into that second reading: the golden touch that stops distinguishing food from gold, generosity budgeted to zero, the armored foot the only part of him that still remembers the world outside the frame.

In the School

The King of each suit governs its element, and governed Earth — Pentacles' assignment in the astrology course's table — is the suit's last word: matter no longer merely kept, but administered, and the temperament every court runs from Page to King before the trumps take over.
