The Plate

The sea is moving and the cup is not. His stone throne rides on open water — no shore in the frame at all — and the plate sets the swell going around him: a ship leaning with the waves on one side, a fish leaping clear of them on the other, the surface everywhere in motion. Amid this the king sits level, a full cup steady in his right hand, a short scepter in his left, a fish-shaped amulet on his chest. Note the one thing he is not doing. Alone in this suit's court, he does not look at his cup; his gaze goes out past the frame, to the weather, to the ship, to whatever needs governing next. The water never touches him, and he has plainly not arranged for that by staying home.

The Reading

Here is the suit's last word on what to do with feeling: neither spill it, flee it, nor seal it, but govern it. The king's calm is not the absence of the sea — the plate surrounds him with sea — it is a working relation to it, held at the level of the hand. The cup stays full and stays level while everything under the throne moves, and he can afford to look elsewhere because the holding has become second nature. Upright, the card is that temperament in a person or a moment: emotional weather acknowledged, absorbed, and answered without theater.

Reversed, the governing turns into either failure or misuse. The waves come over the arms of the throne — composure cracking in the one place it was promised — or, worse, the calm becomes an instrument, feeling banked and dispensed to steer other people. A governed sea serves the ship; a dammed one serves the dam.
