Four of Wands

The Plate

The garland is strung between four planted staves, heavy with fruit and flowers, and it is the only roof this card has. Under it, two figures raise bouquets over their heads; behind them a bridge crosses a moat toward a large yellow manor, with smaller figures gathered near the walls. The four staves stand upright with nothing joining them but the garland itself — a house reduced to its minimum, four corners and an ornament. Waite (1911) reads "country life, haven of refuge" here, and for once the plate is as sunny as the commentary: no cliff, no bandage, no adversary anywhere in the frame.

The Reading

Four is the suit's first stability, and fire holds stillness badly, so the card shows the one form of stillness fire tolerates: a feast. The structure being celebrated is minimal on purpose. Four staves will not keep out rain; what they mark is not shelter but achievement — a boundary declared, a stage completed, a threshold that can be decorated because it will bear the weight of guests. Waite kept the card's meaning steady even reversed, and the tradition has largely followed him: this is one of the few plates whose shadow is only a lesser portion of its light.

Reversed, then, read delay rather than ruin — the homecoming pushed back a season, or the party thrown early to disguise how much of the frame is still unbuilt.
