Eight of Swords

The Plate

The fence has a gap. Eight swords stand in the wet grey ground around the bound woman, but they ring her on one side only — the plate leaves open the ground before her and the ground behind, where a castle rides its cliff. Her blindfold is snug. The cord around her body pins the arms and stops there; her feet are bare, free, and standing in tidal puddles. Waite (1911) calls the card a durance, but a temporary one — restriction rather than irretrievable bondage — and every restraint in the picture is drawn one notch looser than it first appears. Nothing holds the swords upright but mud.

The Reading

Thought severs; thought can also fence. The school reads each planted sword as a sentence — it is too late, they will not have me back, there is nowhere else — driven in at some point by a real hand, since the card is sober about origins: she did not tie herself, and the bindings were true when they were tied. What the plate shows is the moment after the jailers left. The fence stands only because it is believed, the blindfold stays only because bound arms have stopped testing it, and the gap has been there the whole time, unwatched.

Reversed, one puddle-step. Not liberation as lightning — the Eight undoes the way it was done, sword by sentence, and the first belief pulled up loosens the mud around the rest.

In the School

Air in the table of Foundations of Astrology is the element of thought, and the Eight is its cautionary plate: the severing suit turned inward until it encloses. The school sets it beside the Two — both blindfolds, but this one has stopped being a choice and must become one again.
